Need confirmation of diagnosis

Hopefully a quicky with multiple answers that come to the same conclusion.

Neighbors computer has been locking up after 3 minutes to 1 1/2 hours of use. Went over tonight to look at it suspecting the RAM I bought, so I pulled the extra stick. Went through automatic update ( winXp ) and restarts saying there is a missing file and windows needs to restart. Locks up again. I try rolling it back to a previously known good state after it reboots and tells me it cannot find an OS

I try reinstalling off the Partition ( Hewlitt Packard machine ) and it calls up a blue screen saying that there is a problem and it has shut itself down to protect something...I've seen this screen 2x tonight.

Now for the audible aspect of this diagnosis. The computer is making all sorts of noise....the more the computer works worse. I can hear the HDD whirring, grinding, spooling up like normal, and then making sounds like a CD trying to find the boot track on a game disc and not finding it. All sorts of pretty nasty noises.

Got a bad HDD don't we? It's a 40 gig...and I think I'm gonna need to replace it for her. Bad thing is...no install CD or CD Key for XP because it is all on the partition on the drive....not exactly a swift move by HP here IMO. She's a nice old lady living in a mobile home on a tight budget and I'm trying to help her out so she can keep in touch easier with her kids in different states. Anyone know of a good deal, or have a good HDD around 20-40 gig that I can get for her cheap? I'm going to front the cash so she doesn't have to worry about stretching her budget.

Thanks guys!

The only way to be sure it's the HDD is to throw another hard drive in it and try.

Subustution would be best, but the HDD shouldnt be that noisey. Based on your info I agree. And you can order a full restore CD for a nominal fee, $6-8 I think.

You could run Ontrack's diagnostic floppy on that 40G drive. If it is truly on it's last legs, should fail pretty spectacularly!

With all the noises, I'd have to agree it sounds HDD related. Run an Ontrack floppy and then you can tell her for sure.

What about warranty? Surely a 40G drive isn't that old....

Cheers
Mick

Agreed, definatly sounds like a bad HDD... Does kinda suck that there was no restore disks included.

thanks for the input guys...I'm gonna try that 3 gig drive of mine to make sure that it isn't anything else hardware related. I'll keep my eyes open for a HDD..perhaps Shahani will have a nice one up for sale again soon.
