DSL Connection Disconnects With Router

Hi, I've recently purchased a CompUSA 4-Port router to connect my 2 computers to the Internet. On occasion both computers are disconnected from each other, and from the Internet.

When this happens I shut off and power on both the DSL modem and router, and it fixes it. My DSL modem is an ADSL PPPoE Alcatel Ethernet modem.

I've noticed that the router and modem get very hot. (They sit on top of each other). But I don't think that would cause this problem?

If anyone can help me fix my problem, that would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

The modem and router both probably have led's. Do they change color during the crash or blink differently? If so, consult the manuals.

Well, it sounds a lot like its a problem with the router/switch and not the modem. I agree with Jason, see if there is a firmware update for the router and if all else fails, return it and get a new one :-).

Double check to make sure you've got the correct power supply to each device. Some routers or modems take 12V and some take 18V converters. If you try to run an 18V device with a 12V converter, the device will run hot and throw errors.
