Talk Best Linux?

Hey Mates

Im very interested in starting to use Linux since im Deleted off with MS right now Want to contradict MS a little bit I was wondering, which Linux is the best one for a noob? And by a noob I mean a Windows User his whole life. I have tried Linux Conectiva and SuSE and none of them interested me. I have heard Mandrake is the best one for a noob since its the easiest but have also heard that RedHat is just the best Linux out there. Im confused. Which one should I try out? Thanks m8s

I've tried "most " of em...... I say to start with..... go Mandrake. It's the very easiest to get a working system set up with. In rare cases where Mandrake has problems....give RedHat a try. Both are excellent systems. Mandrake is my personal preference of the two.

Hard to go wrong with either. With either..... it's easier to set up than M$ ..... hard to believe....but it's true. The mandrake install is VERY straightforward and simple. And if you don't like the way you set it up the first time..... just reinstall over it.

Oh, and one question, it says when im going to the linuxiso.org site that there are two options for Mandrake, one i586 or something like that and PPC. My question is which one of them? And do I need to download the three of the isos? thanks again

Unless you are running a Mac get the ix86 one.

Thanks siliconjunkie
Do you also agree in Mandrake, or another opinion?

PPC=PowerPC based-machines (which is for Macintoshs)

ix86=Intel and Intel-compatible (read AMD) based machines

Fot ix86:
i386: 386 machines and above
i486: 486 machines and above
i586: Pentium machines and above
i686: Petium II (Pro???) based machines and above
K7/Athlon: For machines with the AMD Althlon processor (not for Intel)

Note that just because one linux distro is rated for i386 and another for i586 machines, don't assume the i586 one is going to be faster or better than the i386 one.

For a beginner starting out on Linux, Mandrake is the best tyo go with IMO. Redhat is more oriented towards servers, and Connectiva has a buggy installation (for now). Icepack is an alternative to consiter, but I haven't been able to use it because it itsn't compatible with my controller card. Debian and Slackware are usually seen as very good Linuxes, but are for experts really.

Listed above. I should also add that you should liberally play with Mandrake to l;earn as much as you can. You'll probably have to reinstall it at some point, but who cares? There's no serial key to enter

I myself am a Redhat fan. But as others said, try several. You may find you like another. That is one of its biggest strenghts. It can be whatever you want it to be.
