another problem with lsass.exe

Unlike the others with the lsass.exe problem, mine reads as follows:

---------------------------------------------------------
lsass.exe - Bad Image

The application or DLL C:\windows\system32\MPR.dll is not a valid Windows image. Please check this against your installation diskcette.
---------------------------------------------------------

I built the computer myself over the past 4 years. It's running an Athlon 800 MHz, etc., but that can't have anything to do with it. My computer has been running totally cut off from the internet for 3 months now with now problems at all. The only recent change was installing software for an iPAQ nearly 2 weeks ago. There was nothing changed before the last successful bootup.

I've tried doing the ASR, but I don't have a disk for that (I know, my fault for not backing it up).

I'd appreciate any help.

Welcome to the world of the lsass.exe error.

I've tried all the solutions, in a previous post, to fix this problem and none of them seem to work. The only way that appears to work, is a full re-install of XP. Not good when you have 3gig of files stored on the computer that aren't backed up . Which is why i'm so reluctant to do so and i'm STILL looking for a fix.

Sorry to hijack this post but are there any HDD experts out there who can help. I've given up all hope of ever getting the damn error to fix. Is there anyway i can save my files?.

I've already got the HDD, with the offending XP, hooked up to this XP machine as a slave. "then recovering the files is simple" I hear you say................well no .

When I try to get into the "user folder", which contains the files, it gives me the access denied error. Now i'm guessing this is because the files belong to the other XP's "username" so i can't log onto them from this XP, which doesn't recognise the username??.

Does anyone have a soulution as to how to save these files, or am i going to have to hide the HDD away in a corner until Microshaft pull their fingers out and make a patch for this error?.

Any help, advice, condolences will be much appreciated, Thanks.

You should be able to change the permission on the folders if you login as administrator. Right click on the folders you want to access, and choose Properties. Go to Security and add yourself in. Don't forget to check "Allow inheritable permissions from parent to propagate to this object."

Good luck.

Sorry, it should be "Reset permissions on all child objects and enable propagation of inheritable permissions" under "Advanced".

Well, I got mine fixed. All I had to do was install Windows XP on my second hard drive, and then copy the offending file over. It's funny how the solution is usually simple like that.

You can use a livecd linux distribution like Knoppix. At startup, it will detect and mount your drives, and they will be availaible on the KDE desktop. And you'll have to use Konqueror instead of Explorer... =P
