Multiplier Question

What does 9.0x/17.0x mean for a multiplier? I found this and others such as 8.0x/16.0x in my BIOS. (Asus A7N8X Deluxe)

Thanks

Its basically a number that the bus speed is multiplied by to get the actual speed of the processor... For example, if the bus speed is 133 and the multiplier is set to 12, it would look something like this 133*12=1600MHz(or there about) basically the formula would look something like this (BUS SPEED)x(Multiplier)=Processor speed

Like he said. And multi-s came about when the cpu's total speed was higher than the fsb. I remember my good 'ole 33mhz fsb system with 33mhz 486, that was my last 1x cpu.

I know what the multiplier is. I'm curious as to what 9.0X/17.0X means. That is a multiplier choice in my bios. Does this mean it's FSB X 9.0 or FSB X 17.0 or FSB X 9.0/17.0 or something else?

It means 9.0X FSB or 17X FSB.

Usually 13.5X . But you can set it lower or higher.

On a couple EPoX boards I use, I can get -- for example -- either 7.0 or 15.0 multiplier for a given BIOS setting, depending on the CPU itself (e.g., a CPU multiplier locked below 13.5 will use one of the two, while a CPU with multipier above 13.0 will use the other).

I would suggest just trying the setting with your CPU and see what speed you are at when you POST. If it locks up, you can always clear CMOS and start over at default settings.

Using the 9.0X/17.0X, I have overclocked my Athlon 2100+. It now runs at 2266 MHz.

Nice OC! Congrats!

BTW, I graduated from UICC (as it was known back than) in '74.
