Outdoors copmuter bogging down

this is a quite annoying problem. when I'm using my computer. Usually Nothing demanding....just chatting, browsing and downloading, things seemed to get bogged down. Pretty soon I can't right click and I can open any new windows. I can't even bring up the task list! any ideas? This is what I'm using.

Athlong XP 2500
512megs of ram
Windows XP pro(updated)
Ge-force 3 64meg card
(2) 40 gig ATA 100 drives, IMB and WD

Are you on broadband internet access? What kind of modem? Ethernet or USB?

If it's USB you might have problems like this, I found when I had a USB modem on DSL my system would start slowing down after a time. Now with the Ethernet there are no problems.

Are you running a firewall, do you know if you have someone accessing your computer while you are on?

Well because there are many variables to this I’ll just point out the most common ones.

1) Your Ethernet card is bad. I have bought bran new Ethernet cards that had problems before.
2) Your comp is loaded with spyware. Use this to remove them. http://security.kolla.de/ (freeware)
3) You have a Trojan or virus if you don’t already have a virus checker. http://tinyurl.com/eod (freeware)
4) You’re being hacked. Get a firewall.

okay....I have the same problem on another computer right next to mine running win2k. Does that narrow it down. I have ad aware 6 updated and scanned. It that a good tool for adware? And that would make 3 bad ethernet cards 2 differet brands. 3com and Realtek. I also have norton antivirus 2003(updated as well)
