Thanks! OK, but is their a way to use something other than X? I know I sound like I don't know anything, because I don't.
EDIT: Oh, I see! So you can type "startkde" to go into KDE, and such. What are the other "start" commands to boot into different environments? I did a full install with everything this time.

You can edit /etc/inittab so that the gui is started by default, just change the default runlevel to 5
id:5:initdefault:
You should also be able to startx by typing init 5 into a console

Umm, you need to be root to do that, and try using pico or nano if they're installed, they're a bit more newbie friendly than other screen editors (vi/emacs)

Well, I'm always logged in as root, if that matters. I'm a little dissapointed with Mandrake 9.1 because it doesn't have drivers for my modem by default (so I need to download them), and my sound doesn't work, requireing another download and compile, which I don't know how to do. When I had 8.1, everything worked the first time, and I'm on my 4th reinstall with this one.
I hope the next version is better.
