If more than 2 items are different, it is unlikely that XP will boot. That includes chipsets on the motherboard, as well as sound cards etc.

Unfortunately, there is no such thing as a 'generic' image for XP.

Actually I've found just the opposite. I'm not sure what we're using software-wise to make the images but I've had pretty good luck with using images for one type of machine on another. Airman97 actually used the image for a Gateway desktop on a Dell laptop and it worked just fine. I never thought it would have worked but that machine still runs fine to this day (knock on wood).

This worked with W9x / NT4.0 / W2k, but no guaranty with XP.

1. format hard drive.

2. copy I386 directory to hard drive

3. booting with W98 floppy

4. run winnt in I386 directory, and complete install.

5. when install is complete and XP is up and running properly, delete from device manage Chip set, video card, sound card, Nic, Etc. Etc.

6. when finished deleting devices, reboot with floppy, run ghost.

The image now has all the basic system, core, and support files ready to go, and the Cab files in the I386 directory for plug & prey.

Like I said, this worked for prior OS's, I'm not sure for XP.
