Can drivers cause slow startup?

I recently bought a soundblaster 16 bit sound card (to run with my cool edit pro). I installed the hardware, loaded up the accompanying cd (included a soundboard option and readme file only), then downloaded the driver. After the driver was installed, I restarted my computer (running XP Professional). The problem: the system gets up to the user selection (as we have 4 different users on the system) then once selected, it takes from 1 to 3 minutes for it to go to the desktop, and sometimes another minute or so for it to load the desktop icons. I've not been able to get the soundcard to receive my microphone/line in signal, because I aborted that in concern over what was up with the system?? I know this is not normal and it makes me concerned over what might be going on somewhere i'm not familiar with. Any suggestions would be great. Thanks.

Well it’s a little late to tell you this now, but I always find the best thing to do with
your soundcard is NEVER install all the crap they give you on the CD. Just download
the latest driver from the soundblaster site & install it. The CD is full of unnecessary
junk that loads up on start up & causes problems. But to turn on your microphone, all
you do is double click on the speaker icon on the start up tray. & that will take you to
the play control panel, select properties, record, then click the box next to the mic.

Go to start -> run, type msconfig and run it. Click on the startup tab and get rid of the unnecessary startup tasks.

Hope this helps.

Windows has always seemed to do that automatically whenever I change stuff in the startup tab. I still check to make sure it's selected though.
