First Lapping

What do y'all think of my first lapping job?

The reason for the lapping is evident in the first pic (crushed an 1800 ).

circles are actually bad...but that second pic looks GREAT. What kind of polish did you use on it?

Holy crap. I saw the second one and went "He posted the wrong pic, he posted a pic of the camera".

I then smacked myself.
Great job. Did you do that by hand or with a rotary tool.

Same here, must have used 1000 grit wet or dry on that finish.
I never saw a HS with a mirror finish!

Hell I start laps with 1000 grit...20 minutes with 2000 grit will do great

To get it that clean though polish is needed. (I use cheap Brass-O stuff)

The polish (and now I SWEAR by it) was Mothers.

Yep, did it all by hand (and Miller Lite ).

Thanks, I thought the result was pretty awesome. It seemed a shame to apply the AS3 afterwards.

Here's my work area for this project.

hehe, you had scenery ... I had a sink

It does suck to mess up such a beautiful thing...but there still are microscopic scratches there so it needs it.

I attached the lapping I did on my DangerDen MAZE4 waterblock. I didn't want it to be perfect, but this isn't bad (I was anxious )

I followed the guide I found from here .

I used 400, 600, 800, 1000, 1500, and finally, 2000.

I did it as suggested and went 10 swipes (back and forth), turned 90º, then another 10 swipes, stopping to add more water and dishsoap (and swig of beer ). I followed that procedure 10x for each grade of paper. Then finished with Mothers.

As a noob to lapping, I was kinda concerned about taking too much off the heat sink that it wouldn't sit tight on the board but I was way off there - still a bastard to attach .

I do have a question though. I have a new heat sink I just got from NewEgg with and aluminum / copper base (see here ) and I wondered what the affect of lapping would have on it being that it is constructed of two different metals?
