Domain Name Availability?

I want to register a domain name that is presently registered. Upon WHOIS, I see that the domain expired last month.. But I can't register it.

I'm confused as to how this works.. This guy hasn't paid for his domain, seemingly doesn't want it and I want to register it, now that it has expired.

Does it take time for these names to be flushed out of a system somewhere? I'm confused..

Someone else has prob already jumped on it but the whois database isnt updated.

There are people that do nothing but come swooping in to snatch them up as they expire in hopes of selling them to you for a profit.

That's not quite what I'm talking about... The domain WHOIS information is still.. there.

Under status, it says; "REDEMPTIONPERIOD"..
