What is your OS? How much ram?
Pc's will get laggy when the CPU usage is high.
Mine did one day and I thought whats the deal I have 512 mb DDr ram and a Xp1900+ running XP. Too good for a laggy PC. If your running Windows Xp click ctrl- alt- delete to see how much your CPU usage is. Not sure with other Windows versions. But might be the same. Also a reboot will help somtimes.

I have seen this too. Not sure why installs can slow things down so much, I have a friend that constantly gripes about it.

My theory is that the contents are quite compressed and it takes resources to uncompress them.

Well, what is your CPU, and your HD speed can make it slower as well. Also, using UDMA cables and if your CDROM is on the same channel can make a significant differnence in speeds.
