quick launch menu help needed

I am running Windows 98. my system is getting slower and slow because i have so many quick launch icons running and taking up ram. How do i remove them? some of them have a disable feature but some don't is there something that will allow me to edit any or all of them. and also, i was wondering what are the things next to quick launch that seem to be separate from the quick launch area. eg quick launch has my volume, time, internet etc. and the menu to the left has my stuff like kazaa and WMP. is there a way to remove those. Also, is it really this stuff that is slowing down my system and taking up my limited ram or is it something else?

Thanks

Try right clicking each and choosing delete. I know this works in windowsXP but I haven't used windows 98 since the summer of 1997 so I can't remember.

use msconfig to check what's running on startup...

go to run, and type msconfig
It pops up, and go to the start up tab. It lists everything that runs at startup and you can take ones out that you don't need.

dragonb, you're referring to startup items and Computer is referring to quick launch menu/icons.

If you mean quick launch, the bar on the left next to the START button just right click on them and delete them. If you mean the bar on the right next to the clock called the System tray then some can be disabled by right clicking and diableing or deleting, some by going into your startup folder and some by using msconfig.

even if the program is in the quicklaunch, doesnt mean its loading. now if the icon is in the start bar next to the clock

like dragonb said, type msconfig to see what is starting up.

Thanks guys that was really fast and helpful. I always thought that the things on the right were the quicklaunch icons but i guess not. Now i'll see if this keeps my comp out of trouble for a while.

Thanks

here is a pic to help you understand

the red is the quick launch bar the yellow is what is already loaded and running.

the quick launch is nothing more than shortcuts. Think of it as another start bar.
