Kids Computers telling me I don't have a CD Rom attached????

My old computer which I've given to an old fellow, has started flashing a message that there is NO CD-Rom attached to the computer. He was listening to CD's on it a few days prior and all was working fine. Does anybody have any suggestions on how to rectify this problem???
The computer I gave him is an old 486, with Windows 98 on it.

Is the cd-rom showing up in device manager? If so, remove it (check the connections of course), reboot...it should get detected again and work fine, assuming that it still does work.

Ok, I checked, in device manager. There is NO CD-Rom listed. All connections are properly in place. Any other suggestions?

When you restart the computer doesn't find it??

Is that the only drive on the cable connected to the MoBo or is there another?

Hi BlankPro
I did what Martoch suggested and went into System on my control panel, and hit the device manager tab. No where on the list was CD rom, so I couldn't delete it and then reboot. As for rebooting, that was one of the first things I tried after checked out the connections.
I've tried everything I can think of, to make his CD player work.
As for checking out whether or not there is another drive connected to the MoBo. First off I haven't got a clue what a "MoBo" is, and how do I check for other drives attached?
Sorry, I'm a tad tech challenged .

MoBo is motherboard, its just annoying to write motherboard every time. Did you try moving the CD drive to another IDE channel?

That is what I would suggest. If you hadn't figured it out, the IDE channel is where the drive plugs into the MoBo. Usually, a ribbon IDE cable will have two spots on it for a drive (hard drive, ROM drive, etc...). Does yours have more than one spot on the ribbon with that one drive that is not working? If so, does that one work? I suppose I assume that it is the only one because "No CD-ROM" was recognized and your hard drive is usually on another channel.

The next thing I would suggest is trying another cable. Rule out the small stuff first.
