Win 2000 Install

I was having real serious problems weeks ago trying to install windows 98 se 0n a HP BA600 Brio computer. The initial problem was that the harddrive crashed . I replaced the hard drive to a 40gb drive that was not recogsied by the bios. I used maxtor dynamic drive overlay (DDO )software and tried unsucessfully many times to install win98se. I say unsucessfully because I would get upto a point where the screen message would say "continuing to load windows. Please wait. I would wait for 3 hours and still windows would not fully load. I switched off the machine and was prompted to start in safe mode which I did several times. I would get a message that windows drivers were not loaded proprerly. I then proceeded to load via option 4. STEP BY STEP CONFIGUATION. It takes you through all these questions abou drivers to which you answer, YES. Then it would arrived at one of the drivers .vxd and stop.No response after pressing the enter key or any key. I finallly wiped the HDD clean with the DDO and installed windows 2000. The install went through straight away. Why was Windows 98 SE giving me so much grief when Win2000 nistalled like a breeze?

I look forward to your response.

Windows 2000 comes with vastly more drivers than windows 98se. Were you asked to insert driver disks? My friend and I agree that .vxd is more than likely a network driver, did it have a problem with network beforehand? It sounds like either win98 didn't have a driver for the device or it was totally incompatible.

You answered your own question there...the driver support in 2K is 10x better than 98. I'm sure most of us would agree that 98 is a thing of the past...I would be willing to throw 2K on any machine that can run 98 to be honest.

98SE is notorious for failing to install .vxd. I agree that 2000 is better and have it on all my computers at home except my kids which has XP home (die... xp home die...). I just got my copy of win2003 (XP server) so we will see how that works.
