Knoppix. This makes a real difference. So you haven't actually installed anything to the drive yet. Hmm.
Check in the motherboard's BIOS and see if the drive is detected there. If not, then you've either got a problem with the hardware or your installation. This would be the first step.
Dumb question: Who made the hard drive? You could try downloading thier utilities and see if your hard drive is detected. It could be something as simple as a misconfiguration problem, IE, incorrectly jumpered, ATA33 cable, etc.
