Can't Boot from Floppy or CD ROM

Alabtron 865 PE Pro; P4-2.4 GHz (533); 1 GHz RAM; ATI AIW Radeon 7500, WD 80 GB w/ 8MB.

The problem: I cannot boot from the floppy, CDRW, or DVD ROM. The sequence is set properly. The drives get recognized, the process gets started, but then the computer just completely shuts down.

This is a replacement board. Before I sent the last board back, I loaded Windows XP Pro on the drive. The computer will boot the drive just apparently just fine. I just loaded Service Pack 1A from the CD. Apparently no problems, rebooted, etc.

My intention was to wipe the drive and dual boot it to W98SE/XP Pro. The floppy gets recognized, it begins the process, and shuts down. I have tried every combination of different cable, floppy, startup disk, and tested each in another computer. All work fine in the second computer.

So I wanted to see if I could boot from CD ROM and install Windows XP again. It gets as far as loading the Executive files and the computer shuts down. Same with DVD ROM. I also tried using a backup copy of XP Pro, in case such was damaged. No luck?

Ever hear of this one?

Yes, I have seen this problem a few times. Check you power supply and your connectors. You may also want to check to see if the shutdown temp is set too low.

I've only worked with a few mobo's with the shutdown feature but the ones I have seen had 60C as the lowest temp in which Shutdown would occur. I can't but wonder if you have an issue with heat or a bad powersupply though. Try taking all extra devices out of the computer except for vid card, ram and hard drive and see what happens.

The computer is running. Temps and shutdown temps are fine. The computer is loaded Service Pack 1A from the CD.

I just loaded the motherboard drivers from the CD and rebooted. Everything is fine.

The thing will not completely boot from either floppy or CD (either drive). As I said, each of these things works in another computer. Other drives have the same effect.

This is a brand new setup. Also before sending the board back, I've had the system professionally tested. The power supply works.

Ah, ok. Mark a few points off of my reading comprehsion skills (might as well take a few for spelling too). I can't say that I have anything intelligent to add other than to say that it sounds like you might have a hardware problem if the computer. 'Fraid I can't be of much more help here.

I was doarking out, peoples! It helps a great deal to have the heatsink seated properly! Kept checking the temp, but looking at the wrong thing. I was looking at system temp instead of CPU.
'Twas hot family!

Does your Mobo have onboard Vid Card? If so have you disabled it? Sometimes a conflict between the two will cause a shutdown.

Other than that it does sound like a hardware prob. You might also disable any auto shutdown (green) features in your CMOS they might not be working correctly.

This reaches the end of my expertise. Oh one other thing you might check is if your OS is loading to memory instead of your HD.

other than that

BTW if the heat sink wasn't seated properly you might want to recheck the thermal compound. hope this helps.
