XP Startup / dim screen and slow

Maybe someone can answer this. I just reloaded XP home and did all the MS updates. Now when XP starts at the black loading screen it starts of real dim and kind of just sits there for maybe 10 seconds. Then it brightens up gradually and loads. Seems to be a little slower than my previous installation. I dont even know if its a problem but just something that is annoying.

I had the same problem a while back. specs? is it right before the welcome screen?

Yep, the black xp screen with the loading bars.

Hi-
I can't find out how to dim the screen in XP- I bought an external battery and when it's plugged in, the computer reads it as if it was plugged into the wall but I want to dim the screen in order to conserve the external battery

Does anyone know how to dim the screen? I can't seem to find the option to do it.
