I used to play Halo using gamespy, My SN was rocket man and my record was around Loses- 10 Wins - 400+ with strictly rockets.
I have had my Xbox since the day of its release and Halo since before that.
Get XBOX Live, Mech assault is my favorite game to play on live, the service is so much better then XBC or Gamespy.

Switch, router, or a 2nd NIC will all work. (need crossover cable if you're using a 2nd NIC tho).

Plug your router's WAN Port into the college network hookup (I assume in your dorm/apartment). Most routers have a built in switch where you can plug generally 4 computer up to it. Just plug in your xbox like a normal computer.
The only tricky part is giong to be that you have to register your computer ethernet card with them. What router do you have specifically? Most newer routers have MAC Address cloning, which will make the college network think that the router is your ethernet card....
Now if you wanted to have your computer hooked directly into the college port, you could need another NIC to hook the router into, but if you bothered doing that there would really be no point in using the router

Well, if they will let you. Its prolly about the same about of work either way. Look in your router settings to see if you find any MAC adress cloning options. I've never used that router b4 but I'm sure someone else here has and can help you more. Otherwise with MAC address cloning you can simply take the MAC address off your computers ethernet card, and input that into the router.
A MAC Address is kind of like the address of the actual piece of hardware.

what ever mac address you registered with the IT department of the school is what you would clone in the router
