Powering off pc after shutting down W98SE

When I shut down windows on the PC at work, it powers the CPU down. But, at home shutting WIndows down, merely puts the CPU in standby. How can I have my home computer power down after I close windows? I didn't see anything in the BIOS or in the control panel.

What kind of machine do you have? Is the Win98SE on your work or home PC?

Back in the day, my parents baught me a "Packard Hell" when I graduated from high school. It had a toggle button on it so the CPU would only go into standby until I hit the power button again. I hated it. Is that the kind of button you have? Or is it just a regular one?

I forgot to try looking in the control panel under power management...DUH.

I'll give that a try when I get home.

I looked in the power management section of the control panel, and everything was fine, also rechecked the bios settings, and there were no places to changes this, that I saw.

I have the same problem. On my old system (Athlon 600) it shuts right down. On the one I just built it goes into stand-by until you hit the power button. And nither of those are store bought (HP, Dell, etc) machines. I thought there was something you could do to shut it right down but either there isn't or I have forgot. Both systems are running 98SE.

I remember seeing something about win98se and powerdown problems - I think MicroSoft released a fix.

Try doing a search on the MS site for Win98se power management.

Also, some bios's have a setting for power button <4 seconds standyby/shutdown. It could be related to that.

hth.
