Kids CD-ROM ATAPI driver question?

I know ATAPI is some kind of CD Rom standard. But do all ATAPI CD Roms
use the same driver, no matter the make? Much like MS’s DirectX is a standard
for video cards. And if they do all use the same driver, are there ATAPI updates?

Reason I’m asking is I just put together a system for a friend, with a cheep ATAPI
no name CDRW & it’s picky as hell on which CD’s it likes. & was thinking maybe
new drivers may help.
The OS is Win-ME & everything is installed & running just fine, Windows auto detected it
& shows it as a ATAPI CDRW. But it burns on some CD’s & not others, so I was thinking
their may be a newer ATAPI driver update that could help. It’s an older computer so it can’t
handle XP & everything is running fine but this little CDRW problem. I just don’t know much
about the ATAPI standard.

Thanks for any info

I think it's more like the references are built into the CDROM so it just tells Windows what it is.

Most (if not all, I'm not sure) do have firmware updates. Couldn't hurt to try that.

Welcome to TechIMO!

I don't believe your problem lies with the ATAPI drivers.

More than likely it's an issue with the system age IMO.

Could try firmware but if it's burning sometimes and not others it may be a RAM issue. Not enough when other stuff is running in the background.

Looks like you'll just have to find some CDR's it likes and stick with them. I have an old Acer CDRW that doesn't like some of the generic no name CDR's available from CompUSA.

Thanks guys that was very helpful, the references being built into the CDROM
makes perfect sense. Now just one more question about firmware updates,
because this is a no name generic CDRW, will any ATAPI firmware update
work? I’d hate to do an update & end up killing his CDRW all together.

And thanks for the kind welcome.

It has to have a brand. I've never seen a component that isn't has no brand.

Updating the program you burn with is a safer approach to solving the problem.
