Compress my drive yes or no?

This is my SECONDARY hard drive I'm talking about, it has nothing OS related on it.

I'm thinking of compressing the drive to get more out of it (only 6gb) but I heard that some stuff gets screwed up when it's compressed. Is it true that some things will not work on a compressed drive?

The drive is formatted with NTFS. Operating system is Windows 2000.

Drives are so cheap nowadays its not worth compressing. You may get some files messed up or corrupted. NTFS is a very efficient way to store and if you must, zip the files and save space that way.

Depends what kind of files they are, too. For example, if you have lots of .jpg files you will not save either by zipping or compressinf. These files are compressed already.

If you have lot of .bmp, .doc, .ppt, .xls then you stand to gain a lot of space by zipping and saving on a non-compressed drive.

This get really messed up when yu compress a drive. Everything slooooooowwwwwwwssss down and many things won't work right. You are better off going out and getting either a) a new hard drive or b) a legit copy of WinRAR (the best compression scheme, even better than ACE).

2 things

1. Ok I see it will cause problems so I won't do it.
2. You can run programs from compressed drives but you can't run programs from winrar files (not with a shortcut anyway).

Does 2k support compressing individual directories/files, and colouring them blue in explorer (like XP)? That could be a way to do it, then only compress the stuff you don't use much.
Don't do the whole drive though. Its a nightmare when you have to recover it after its screwed up.
