Internet connection = slow!

Ok, I still have this old computer (200Mhz pentium 1, 128mb ram, 2 gig hdd) but this time i'm having problems with the internet connection. It used to have windows95, 98, ME, without problems, but now wiht Red Hat 7.3 I get like 200 BYTES/sec....and it really sucks. AIM won't even connect!

I'm connected through a router on a cable connection, and every other computer gets the usual 200k/s or so.

The only other thing is that I'm in another room, so I'm connected through a 50 foot ethernet cord..would that long cord make it slow? If not, I'm guessing that 1.) there's a setting i can change in red hat or 2.) i should go back to windows

What about transferring things between the PCs? That would rule out the router. What kind of NIC is it?

Try moving the rig next to your router and try a different CAT5 cable. If your using a 50 footer, that's 50 feet of failure points that could go wrong.

Have you tried a whole bunch of different websites to confirm you are getting really bad perofrmance? (I guess you have) Have you tried pinging some website like google? You do that just like in wiondows, except you must hit Control+C to stop the pingings instead of it stopping after 4 pings.

Or you can type:
ping -c4 ipaddress
Where -c4 will tell it to ping 4 times. You can dictate the number of pings with the -c option.
