UPDATE:

ok, now onto bigger and badder problems. we tried installing using different ram, different cd drive, different installation cd, and tried full formatting the drive (new hdd) ntfs instead of the ntfs quick format. the format made it to 100% then said "windows cannot format this drive blah blah blah". i checked the drive (40gb 8mb buffer western digital) with wd's diagnostic program and it checked out fine. so what the heck is going on here!? please somebody help because i cant think of anything else to do. also, when using one of the cd's(mine, my friend is using his cd key, im just letting him use my cd) the installation gets to the point where it is copying files except that a few of the files will not copy. the other cd(his) gives us a random bsod everytime we try to install.

thanks!

Delete all partitions, overwrite the MBR. Run diagnostics, then write zero's to the drive { using mfrs setup floppy } ( will take quite a while ) then fdisk, format and re-install. I've saved a few drives using this method.

or drop an A-Bomb inside the HDD... I recommend you RMA the HDD its under warranty. If it has the same problems after you get the new HDD then I think it is a motherboard issue and post on the mobo section cuz I dont know anything about motherboards except mine.

I agree with Pickel and KJ0055's suggestion, but - by any chance - is the mobo in question an EPoX 8K5A2 or 8K5A2+?

I had a heck of a problem with installing XP Pro on an 8K5A2... and it was a mobo defect (cured by replacing via RMA). W98se would install fine, but XP and that mobo (at least the earlier revisions of the board) had a higher problem rate.

no, its an msi something or other, but there is a chance the mobo is broke bc my other friend sold it to the friend in the first post and he said he wasnt sure if it worked or not and he would refund the $$ if it was broke.

Could be an issue with the CD drive or any peripheral. Try using a different video card and cr drive. Don't connect sound card.

Thats the only thing I can think of aside from the issues above. Hard drives rarely go bad so I doubt that could be it. RAM/MB frequently are incompatible or just don't get along.

You'll have to do it by a process of elimination and trial & error.
