I've been trying to copy some jpg files onto a floppy from an old computer with Pentium 133 running Win 98, then transfer them to another computer (emachine T1100 with celly 1.0 ghz.) running Win XP.
Copying from the old computer is ok. But when I try to read the disk with the emachine, it says it can't read the disk, it is not formatted.
Have you tried reading a disc that was made by the XP machine??
Is the floppy recognized in the device mgr?? Can you read floppies from the XP machine to the win 98 ???

Damn the torpedos, full speed ahead
Both computer's floppy drives work fine with disks that were formatted by that computer. But when I try to read a disk on either machine that was formatted by the other computer, I get the disk not formatted error message.
This same thing happened to me some time ago and then it corrected itself and I don't have a clue as to why. I thought it might have something to do with FAT and NTFS differences.
If both of the computers are close together I recommend networking with a patch cable. Its faster and it doesnt matter what file system or OS you use. The cables are cheap if you're not going very far, and NICs are like 5 bucks.
1.44 drives are notorious for their alignment problems. The older larger floppy drives were far more reliable. I'd try and shake the disk to kinda nudge it and see if that helps.
My daughter used the XP computer last night then turned it off.
This morning I started it up and it reads the floppy from the W98 computer. I don't have a clue as to what happened. But I'll be more cognizant of events. If I find the culprit, I'll post again.
I appreciate your help and interest. dr
Up til today I've had no problems then...
today I tried to copy some files from my W98 computer onto my XP emachine. It kept saying the disk was not formatted.
I got a little P$$t and replaced the disk with more force a few times and voila! It worked. Must be the drive alignment or something as shahani suggested.
