remote lan connection?

I was wondering if there is any way (with a program) to connect two remote PCs together to form a LAN?

More or less the story is that I would like to play Warcraft 3 with a friend over local area connection, but remotely through an internet connection. We tried both battle.lan v.5 and lancraft 1.01b which are sopposed to allow TCP/IP connection play with Warcraft 3, but we couldn't get them to work (appeared to be too outdated).

Any suggestions (within reason and fairly easy to use) ?

Thx,
VHockey

Not really at all... I had a BEFSX41 router that could be configured as a VPN endpoint for a little while, but after trying to get the thing to work at all (even for basic internet connection) for about a week "they" (linksys tech) finally returned it as defective.

Are there ways to setup VPNs using software (preferably free) rather than having to have a hardware device?

What OS's are on the pc's you plan to use. VPN is easy to setup on W2K and XP, but a little more work if using win98se.

Below is the instructions from the W2K help to setup the pc as a VPN Client. I would make the XP machine a VPN Server. I can't remember the details, since I don't have an XP machine here, but I know its easy. Check the help on the XP machine. I would make both pc's members of the same workgroup and you may want to logon to each with the same user name and password. Then try to connect from the W2K pc to the XP pc. Let me know how it goes. I never tried gaming over VPN.

To make a virtual private network (VPN) connection

Open Network and Dial-up Connections.
Double-click Make New Connection, and then click Next.
Click Connect to a private network through the Internet, and click Next.
If you have already established a dial-up connection, do one of the following:
If you need to establish a connection with your ISP or some other network before tunneling to your destination computer or network, click Automatically dial this initial connection, click a connection in the list, and then click Next.
If you do not want to automatically dial an initial connection, click Do not dial the initial connection, and then click Next.
Type the host name or IP address of the computer or network to which you are connecting, and then click Next.
Do one of the following:
If you want this connection to be made available to all users on your network, click For all users, and then click Next.
If you want to reserve the connection for your own use, click Only for myself, and then click Next.
If you want to let other computers access resources through this dial-up connection, select the Enable Internet connection sharing for this connection check box, and then click Next.
Type a name for the connection, and then click Finish.
Notes

To open Network and Dial-up Connections, click Start, point to Settings, and then click Network and Dial-up Connections.
To make the connection available to all users, you must be logged on as Administrator or as a member of the Administrators group.
You can create multiple VPN connections by copying them in the Network and Dial-up Connections folder. You can then rename the connections and modify connection settings. By doing so, you can easily create different connections to accommodate multiple hosts, security options, and so on.

I think I understand how to setup the "connect to" part, but how do a setup the other machine to receive the incoming connection?

Make the XP machine a VPN SERVER. Is the XP machine Pro or Home? Pro I hope. Below are instructions for doing this.
