Even if your standalone dvd player doesn't support svcd, you might be able to trick it into thinking that the svcd you just put in it, is actually a vcd.
(I have to do that, there is no audio if I burn strict svcd)

If your player won't play SVCD at all, like many won't, then you can still make very decent looking VCDs. Yes, in spite of everything everybody just told you, VCDs can look very good.
To make high quality VCDs all you need do is jack-up the kbps. Standard kbps for a VCD is 1,150kbps. If you bump that up to over 2,000kbps you'll find the video quality of the clips to be vastly superior. I have many VCDs that are encoded at 2,300kbps and they look very excellent indeed.
And in my limited experience with only about half a dozen stand-alone DVD players, none of them will play a SVCD, and 5 of the 6 had no problem playing my customized VCDs. Although I'll admit I have not tried the trick of making as SVCD with a false VCD header yet.

use muno's link to dvdrhelp.com and go to dvd players section. Search for your model, it'll give the specs along with other users experiences with types of media, etc.
Out, that's excellent; never knew you could do that
You'll need to play around with bitrates when encoding, many players support vcd and svcd but only at certain bitrates. Too high a bitrate usually leads to choppy or out of sync play.

FWIW
if you're going to spend loads of cash on a plasma monitor, why not drop some on a dvd burner? WIth such a large screen you will notice the loss in quality in any type of compression. Even dvd's don't hold up extremely well on large monitors/tv screens.

SWEET! It looks like my new DVD player supports SVCD. Now all I need is to buy a DVD-rom for my computer....

It's droppyales link, not mine.
Going for a dvd-burner is a good idea, they cost so little these days.
But if you do get one, make sure your standalone player accepts the format. (There are dvd-r/w, and dvd+r/w burner, or those that burn both).

Well... to me 200-300 dollars for a dvd burner is quite a bit of money, not to mention the cost of media

I remember paying $300 for a 1x cd-r burner by mitsumi.
The media doesn't cost that much imo, $2-3 per media, which is cheaper than cdr media cost ($0,5-1).
