i would recommend
www.gamespot.com they're very informative, and seem to be pretty unbiased. they also do some hardware reviews.
now they do have a subscription service set up. you can read all the reviews you want (if i remember right) but you can only download movies, patches, etc for like a week after they come out (or something like that). i actually bought a subscription and i think it's been more than worth it...even if only for the fact that i never have to use fileplanet.
As for mods and stuff i would check out www.planet<insert game name here>.com. they have most first person shooter games available. planetquake.com is where it all started tho if i remember right.
