XP Upgrading problem

hey yall. my brother has a brand new emachine. it came with xp home edition. he wanted me to upgrade it to xp pro. i was working on it and everything was going smooth until the first time the machine needed to reboot during the install after it copied all the install files from the cd. it starts to load windows with the startup screen and the little bar goes across twice then the system freezes and does nothing. tried reinstalling a couple of times and nothng. same problem. i could reformat but i dont want to do that unless there are no other options. any ideas?

it might be the XP cd... I had a similar problem and eventually had to reformat, but i would send back the cd and ask for a new one, if it is a burned copy burn another one... if you can not get it to install finding a program to recover the important data on the hard drive--erd commander its great but I think its ex*****ive

-Were there any "fun" qwerks when it had XP Home on it?

-Would there be any reason to think that hardware may have been gone south (knocked, shocked, jumpers moved, installed)?

I've had XP installs where it would sit there for a few minuites, not appearing to do anything, then suddenly switch to the "Press Ctrl+Alt+Delete to logon" screen. BTW it looks a lot nicer in XP than in 2k. But that's just because of the default window decoration.
