No POST beep. CPU or Motherboard?

Hi,

I've just tried to build my first PC without success. The specs of the components are:

Duron 1.3 + Heatsink+Fan
Asrock k7vt2
VGA S3 Savage 4 LT
256Mb DDR 266
ATX Case with 300W PSU

The curent siutation is:

I've taken out most components and now I just have the motherboard and the CPU+Heatskink+Fan placed in a non-conductive surface outside the case. The power comes from the PSU in the case. When I switch the power button signal both the fan of the CPU and the Case start to work but nothing else happens. I don't get any BEEP. I konw the speaker works and I've checked the voltages out of the power supply (without the motherboard connected) and they seem to be fine.

I guess I can say that the problem is either the CPU or the Motherboard. Can you tell me if there is a way to konw if the problem comes from the mobo or the CPU in a situation like that?

I'm really down. I thought this was going to be really easy and it has turned to be a long weekend nightmare. I'm really short of cash so this is why I decided to DIY in the firstplace. I can't afford to buy more parts (well maybe a new duron, that's all) so any help will be much appreciated.

Thank you all.

Take a look a the little switch on the back of the power supply and make sure it is set to the proper voltage.

Do you have another processor that you could try in that board? If you could borrow one from a friend or something, you could test the mobo. The only other alternative is to try a POSTMortem card, but then that would cost quite a bit of money...

Did you order this online or buy from a brick & mortar store? If it is B&M, take the one (or both) of the parts back and try a new one.

Might be off base here but if it has a CMOS clear jumper on the motherboard have you checked to make sure it is not in the clear position?

I always check this ever since I received a MSI board with the jumper set in the clear position.

Yea, sometimes they put the jumper on clr instead of NRML. That ill halt a boot for sure. Also make sure there isn't a jumper on mobo for the initial FSB at boot. It could be at 133fsb hence oclocking cpu too high and no boot-no beeps as usual. My Asus has one for 100/133fsb default. Check your jumpers in mobo setup part of manual. Usually its a setting and not bad hardware. And you always check that first. Keep trying you'll get it worked out. And then cometh the rewards! You'll feel more confident next time knowing you built one before. And the time after that you'll know more of what to look for when diagnosing. Its trial and error with lots of patience.

Not sure what you mean about 2 psu's? LOL changing the psu or it being defective WONT cause any post beeps. You also wont get any beeps usually if cpu is clocked too far or dead or not installed at all as I said above. Only so much the pc can tell ya- you are supposed to be the inteligent side of the unit. And F'in g your Pc doesnt help it any. hehe

Quite embarrassed, but this has also happened to me before. I tried everything, even walked away from it for a couple of hours to think and calm down. Checked the switch, it was on 230v, not 115v. I'd have power, lights, fans but no post or beeps.
