I'm looking to get a 80 gig HD but I noticed my HD is 5400 RPM would it be safe to put in a 7200 RPM does it matter?

What would be the right choice.

You didn't tell us what kind of computer you have so it's hard to give good advice. Still, if you machine was made in the last two years or so I'd recommend going with a 7200 rpm drive. You'll notice things loading (including Windows) a lot faster with a 7200 rpm drive over the 5400 rpm one.

I have used Maxtor, Western Digital and Seagate and all have worked fine. Get a 7200 rpm drive as large as your computer will support and the size you feel you need.

I would recomend a 7200rpm drive with an 8mb cache.
can make adifference in some areas and not much more expensive than standard 2 mb cache drives.

I have never bought anything else besides Western Digital. You can get a 7200 RPM HDD with a 8 MB Cache on newegg.com for pretty cheap.

if you have the money I would go with the western digital raptor hard drive. It comes with 36gb but has a 10,000rpm rotational speed. It is about $150 online. It comes with 8mb cache and a 5 year warranty when purchased retail.
