Booting with RAID
Hi there! I have a bit of a weird problems with my setup! I decided to install 2 maxtor 120gb sate drives and set them up as MODE STRIPE and optimized for performance! I had windows XP on my c drive, and decided I didnt want to format this drive until I knew everything was ok with the raid setup! anyways! I had to disconnect this drive to allow me to install windows XP on the raid setup! everything went ok until i connected my c-drive back up! windows would no longer boot from my raid drive! the only way I can get my raid drive to boot into windows XP is if I disconnect my c drive which is master on the primary ide channel! I have also formated this drive! but if left connected! windows will not boot from my raid drive! anyone have any ideas or theorys on how to resolves this issue?
SETUP

Go into your BIOS and adjust your boot order.

I tried that! when I select scsi as first boot device! it just hangs and does nothing! also tried selecting first boot device as hd1, then hd2 etc!
as I said in my previous post! if I hook my old c-drive back up which still has windows xp installed on it! it boots up fine with the raid drives!
I'm beggining to think I might be as well to stick with this setup and just have the raid setup for xtra storage!
I'm quite new to raid! so I dont know if there is any pros to having the operating system installed on the raid drive??

Well, if you have Windows installed on the array, then your computer will boot to the first boot device it encounters. Your BIOS *should* have an option to boot from the array, could be that 'boot from SCSI' entry is it, but regardless it seems to be checking the primary IDE channel first. If you could make that drive a slave on that channel you might be able to boot from the array, otherwise I'd not worry about installing Windows to RAID. Striping (RAID 0) is not very worthwhile because while you get the storage capacity of both drives, your speed only increases maybe 10%, plus if one drive fails you've lost all the data striped over both drives. I'd install Windows to either your Maxtor or your WD (whichever you feel like making the master) and use the SATA drives in a RAID 1 array. You'd only have 120GB of storage in the array, but it would all be backed up to the other drive |

yeah! I know what your saying! problem is! I already have my western digital 80gb drive set up as slave on that channel! so I'm just wondering if the same thing will happen if I swap the two drive round making the maxtor slave and the w/digtal master!
anyways! I think your right about the bootup drive! but I'll give I'll try swapping the ide drives around to see what happens!
thanks for your help by the way! it has been appreciated!
I'll keep you posted if I come up with a solution for this one!

Hi, i've been having very similar problems. Seems even if you set everything up to boot from raid, if windows sees any type of IDE drive on the primary ide, it tries to put some files there, or expects to read from there when booting. (ntdetect, ntldr, boot.ini). I swapped my two IDE cables around so my two CDRs were on IDE0 and my fixed disks on IDE1 and now everything is working OK.
Dave.
