Hey.. First thing I would do is to identify the brand of hard drive, go to the manufacturer's website and download the hard drive utilities and run diagnostics to fix any problems. Then I would write "Zeros" to the drive ( included in tools from mfgr ) Then format and try to re-install. Will take a bit of time but I've had success with hdd that otherwise seemed bad. Good luck
