Win 2K Pro Stalls while Registering Components

I have a user with a 500Mhz Compaq that had Win NT Pro. We are tryingto upgrade it to Win 2000 Pro. The installation shouldn't take more than an hour. This was taking several hours and seems to have stalled during the 'registering components' portion.

Any ideas?

BTW, is there a way to just cancel the installation and go back to the original NT configuration?

Is this a upgrade or full edition of W2k?

upgrade from NT. this is required as I really don't want to re-install all the configurations. In addition, a full install may wipe out important data.

My inclination is that it is a failing hard drive that has not gone critical yet. I plan to ghost the disk tommorrow then try it on the ghosted disk.
