My laptop wont format or load windows

I recently got my Hp n5340 back from hp for a repair on my faulty hard drive and dvd drive. it worked fine for about an hour but then when i tried to boot up, it hung on the bootscreen for an hour and i finally shut it off. then I tried re-installing Windows XP pro and it's been stuck on the formatting screen at 0% for another two hours.

What's going on?

If I do a quick format (ntfs) it formats, loads the files and then says something about a corrupt kernel32.dll image. I don't know what that means.

so I'm trying to do a normal format(ntfs) with Winxp pro. and here I am, two hours later with 0% formatted and a crap pile for a laptop. Please help.
