Two problems - can you help?

I've got two problems, and I hope someone can help me fix this.

1. Installing any ADOBE READER version:

Message -

Can not start this 16-bit program. Close other applications and try again."
(translated). It also says there's not enough memory.

OR: Nothing happens after unpacking the files in the installer.

Windows XP, Pentium 4 2.4 GHz, 228 RAM

2.

Getting a laptop going when it's without an operating system. The hard drive was cleaned up
really good before it was given to me. I can't get into any BIOS during setup. It also seems that
the machine is confused about what's the A: and what's the C: drives. It has removable floppy and CD-ROM drive,
which makes it difficult to get anything sane done, as I constantly have to switch between these two drives in
order to find some loophole which would give me the POWER to revitalize this old thing.

It's a Compaq Armada, 266 MHz laptop, I don't know anything else about it.

Thanks for bothering to read this stuff

You are talking about the free Adobe Acrobat Reader, correct? Did you download the latest version from the Adobe website? I pretty sure its a 32Bit program. Pretty weird if you are trying to install that and you get a 16bit program error message.
