Pushing out Win2k SP4

Questions guys,

I work at a help desk where we need to push out Sp4 to all our Windows 2000 users. Now of course going around to each desk is an option and may have to be the answer, but we would like to avoid that. Does anyone know of a process that is largely invisble to the users that we could use? Or even one that that is semi-invisble .. It would be a huge help!!! Thanks!

It needs a reboot after install, so people can't really work while it is going...
do you use active directory?

Yes we do use active directory and a reboot is no problem, we can alert the users that first thing in the morning they will need to press OK and allow the machine to reboot.

If you add users and PC's to a new group, and that group can run the installer with options, so it performs a remote install, then when they log in, it will authenticate, and run the install, before saying 'reboot me!'. Somewhere on the MS site you can get hold of the full SP4 file (around 100mb), and install it from there

Ok.. Lets pretend I know How to open AD and and go from there

Is this a distribution group or a security group? I would guess distribution, but then what do I know?

I can create that group, add users to it .. then how do I get a login script for just that group?

That I will get back to you on - I'll PM you later this evening, or tomorrow morning - I am going out the office for an after hours meeting, and with what I need to discuss, it'll take a LONG time!

Speak to you soon.

Chris.
