I am running a nVidia Geforce2 MX400 (64mb) on a Intel D845BG motherboard.
The specs for the board save it is rated for 4x(1.5V). I have checked the specs for the 128mb and 256 mb upgrades and they indicate that the cards are compatible and will work. Will I experience any less performance by installing either in a 4x slot verses a 8x slot. Also, for the difference in price are the 256 cards that much better than the 128 cards?
You won't experience any noticeable performance loss by installing an 8x card in a 4x slot. You actually don't want to be using AGP tranfers when you're gaming as they are much slower than your graphics chip using on-card memory. At the moment, you don't need 256mb video memory, and when you will need it, the video card will be outdated.
So, basically, a good 128 mb video card should do the trick.
Well said. While you may lose a few points [read:10!] between a 256mb 8x card on a 8x board and the 128mb on a 4x slot, in real gaming terms, there is little to no difference, or point. maybe in a generation or two, 8x will become more powerful, but that will be the card improving.
So go for the simple 128mb card, and enjoy its power!!
