OE6 Attachment issues (W98se)

As usual, I go to a location to work on a customers comp...she says it wont connect to the internet after the lightning storm...no problem..new modem takes 10 minutes...hehe, its never that simple!

Anyway..here is the issue.

OK she has IE6 and OE6 on a W98se machine...she is trying to get email attachments but she always gets "oe has removed access to this attachment blah blah"....so I say "no problem"...I go to the security tab in OE to uncheck the "do not allow attachments to be saved or opened blah blah".....hehe...its greyed out! hmmm.

Anyone ever seen this one before? Is it somehow related to have IE6 on w98?

Anyway, at her house, I checked for viruses and she had a klez variant....anyway, I brought the comp home and have now totally reloaded w98se etc. I installed her "Sitestar" dialup account which installs oe6....I do all windows updates (except dx9 hehe) and all oe6 updates etc etc.

Its still giving me a greyed out option for ""do not allow attachments to be saved or opened blah blah".

Any ideas??

When I search google I see references to the fact that this setting is related to the "folder options" of Internet Explorer...(or windows explorer, Ive checked both) It is wanting you to set the file download settings.

What am I missing here? If I can adjust those file download settings on W98se..where do I do it at?

Here is the reference I see to folder options "This behavior occurs if the Do not allow attachments to be saved or opened that could potentially be a virus option is enabled, and the e-mail attachment is determined by Outlook Express to be "unsafe". By default, the Do not allow attachments to be saved or opened that could potentially be a virus option is enabled in Outlook Express 6 SP1. When this virus-protection feature is enabled, Outlook Express uses the Internet Explorer unsafe file list and the Confirm open after download setting in Folder Options to determine if a file is safe. Any e-mail attachment with a file type that is reported as "unsafe" is not downloaded, and access to the attachment is removed. "

Where is this--> Confirm open after download setting in Folder Options

The lady said she used to be able to get attachments!! hmmm, cuz I have just done a fresh install and I cant.....is there some possible way her ISP can in some way block these attachments (doesnt seem likely).

Oh yeah, and the little flaw still works where I can go "forward" and THEN I can open the attachment, lol...but why is the option greyed out to start with??

Thanks, JP

And this isnt available as far as I see on this etup

This option is enabled by default in Outlook Express Service Pack 1 (SP1). If you enable this option, Outlook Express uses the Internet Explorer 6 unsafe file list and the Confirm open after download setting in Folder Options to determine whether a file is safe. Any e-mail attachment with a file type reported as "unsafe" is blocked from being downloaded.

NOTE: The Internet Explorer 6 unsafe file list includes any file types that may have script or code associated with them. To add additional file types to be blocked or remove file types that should not be blocked:
Click Start, point to Settings (or click Control Panel), and then click Control Panel (or switch to Classic View or View All Control Panel Options).
Double-click Folder Options.
On the File Types tab, click to select the file type that you want to block or allow, and then click Advanced. If the file type you want to add is not listed, perform the following steps:
Click New.
In the Create New Extension dialog box, type the file extension you want to add to the unsafe file list.
Click OK, and then click Advanced.
Click to place a check mark (block) or remove the check mark (allow) from the Confirm open after download check box

Cus there IS NO folder options in control panel, lol.

And under OE "tools, options, security, virus protection" I DID set it to "Internet Zone" which the the less secure of the options but the other thing is still greyed out.
