I would think the easiest (still not so easy) way to do this would be with PCAnywhere or VNC or a program like that.

Don't know if that's possible. Why couldn't you just have your desktop access the net as normal and then contact the desktop from your laptop using a program to reomote control and view what is on it's screen?

You'll probably be limited to the connection where your going to. If you have to use a phone line at a hotel or friends house and they don't have broadband, you'll be stuck with dail up, unless you can connect wirelessly thru wireless lan set up.

Check with your ISP, many have a free available dial-in line for their broadband users.

I know I used to have that option with ATTBI, but now that it's switched to Comcast I'm not sure.

There are some free dial -up ISP's out there that are loaded down with ads, but are free or at discounted.....4.99, 9.99 / mnth. Either way you will be limited by the connection going to your home connection. If you dial into your home connection you will still only have dial-up speeds using your dsl. Sorry I have no links available, but maybe someone else can post some that is more familiar with dial-up services.
