How exactly do you overclock?

Hey all I am running and AMD 2800+ XP on ASUS A7N8X-A nforce2 mobo, I just have a newb question I guess. I've never owned a computer other than my 1998 HP which was intel inside celeron. So how do I overclock? Is it a BIOS setting or is it done by actually physically tweaking the chip? Any insight or links to tutorials would be appreciated.

It is a primarily done in BIOS, aided with the right equipment ( your cpu, and that particilar NF2 mobo qualify most excellently ).

There is a lot of stuff on the 'net on howto, but I've found this guide to be excellent. It should be read completely to get the most out of it.

It starts with a section on cooling, and then gets into the meat of it. Cooling is a great place to start, as the major byproduct ( and potential "speedbump" ) of overclocking is heat.

Again, the guide is excellent, but should be read all the way through.

Hope this helps.

I have the same mobo, and I posted a thread the other day about this. For your CPU, you can overclock it in the BIOS, but first you have to unlock it. I'm not sure exactly how you do that (my 1800 didn't need to be unlocked)

that 2800 should be a "Barton" and not need to be unlocked. I think the most you will get ,without extreme cooling would be somewhere near 2400 mhz. all depends on the board and chip. My 3000 stock at 2156 is now running at 2300 mhz. I heard somewhere that 2400 mhz was the top for the Barton but I could and probably am wrong.

By the way try going to
