Outlook Slows to a Crawl During Send/Receive

Outlook 2002 performs periodic send/receives while I'm on-line. Whenever this occurs the entire app slows to a crawl, I can't open messages, drop down menus, switch windows or anything. It's even worse when performing Calendar actions. This happens even when no other applications are running. I connect to my ISP via cable modem. For my company e-mail I have to use a VPN client to access the intranet and Outlook 2002 for mail. The VPN client doesn't cause any performance problems with my browser or other applications so I don't think it has anything to do with the Outlook issue. I run XP Home Edition and have installed all XP and Office updates and service packs. My machine has 512MB RAM, a 1.9ghz Pentium IV and a 3COM 10/100 duplex NIC. For personal use , I use Outlook Express without the need for the VPN client. I have no performance problems with OE at all. Any ideas what might be causing the application performance hit?

I do not know if this is your problem but I had a problem when I first went to XP pro. Shortly after install I decided to get rid of that pesky waste of memory MS messenger. I went to the add and remove programs section and removed it. All hell broke loose after that. When I opened outlook express i had a horriffic delay when launching, sending , and receiving. I found out that there was a problem with using add remove programs to achive said goal. After much pain I re-installed MSM and all has been well since.
