At Home 7vaxp setting incorrect core voltage

Hello all
I have a stable system using a 7VAXP V1.0, an XP2100, and PC2700 RAM and I have aspirations to upgrade to an XP2600 with 333FSB.

My query is that this MB is setting the CPU voltage high (1.82V)regardless of BIOS version. There is no offset in BIOS for pushing this setting up, although I can set it higher...

I am worried about frying the new CPU and don't want the extra heat either.

My theory is that there is a hardware build problem specific to the 7VAXP V1.0. I also think that I should be able to modify the motherboard CPU power supply to lower this voltage.

Gigabyte have been no help at all.

I just hope the voltage hasn't been deliberately pushed up to overcome another hardware problem...

Any suggestions?

It's not that the board sets it at this...it's that the CPU actually runs at that.

My 2600+ should run at 1.65v and it's running 1.7v right now.

No

The motherboard harware sets the CPU voltage.

The BIOS can provide a positive offset to the voltage, but it can't turn it down.

Thanks anyway.

That does look bad, does the voltage stay at that level regardless of the chip you put in, or does it run a certain amount above it. Some mobo manufacturers have it add a certain amount onto the voltage to improve stability. I don't remember which though, or rather I didn't think gigabyte was one.

Remember you can never fully trust a BIOS/motherboard reading fully; especially with voltages. The only sure way is to get the reading yourself with the proper tools.

I have measured the voltage with a digital multimeter and it does correlate with CPU voltage reporting using MBM (motherboard monitoring software).

What I am hoping for is someone who has diagnosed the motherboard problem, or the reason behind the raised voltage.
Maybe it is to overcome a stability problem...

Thanks
