Slackware 8.1, ALSA...etc
So I've been trying to get the ESS 18xx sound chipset working on this Compaq Armada 1573 in Slackware 8.1, but no success. I've tried following every guide I've found.
Right now I can't get to the alsa-project homepage.
I've got the module installed, the library installed and the utilities installed.
But modprobe snd-es18xx won't work.
Do I need to specify IRQs and IO?

Have you put the module in the correct location of /lib and are you using the kernel version in /usr/src/linux? Check there's no additional dependencies, and what machine type are you compiling the kernel for?

Armada 1573, Pentium MMX 233. I'm not sure how the onboard sound works, but my guess would be via PCI(?)
The module compiles and installs right afaik.

no, when you compile the kernel, in menuconfig, it asks you for the CPU type, ie 386/486/athlon/P3 etc. Try doing it all for 486/586 or something.

I think it's the default, 386?
I have soundcore enabled.
I have compiled the driver module.
When I try to modprobe snd-es18xx this comes out:
/lib/modules/2.4.18/kernel/sound/acore/snd.o: unresolved symbol unregister_sound_special
/lib/modules/2.4.18/kernel/sound/acore/snd.o: unresolved symbol register_sound_special
/lib/modules/2.4.18/kernel/sound/acore/snd.o: insmod /lib/modules/2.4.18/kernel/sound/acore/snd.o failed
/lib/modules/2.4.18/kernel/sound/acore/snd.o insmod es18xx failed
I've really got no clue about what I'm doing.

OK, are you compiling the driver separately or as part of a full kernel compile? If you go for the latter there's less to go wrong.
The error messages you give suggest that the es18xx module isn't properly linked to the kernel core.
Also you *could* consider upgrading to a more recent kernel package - 2.4.21 is rather nice |

At that age of the system, chances are this is an ISA PnP sound chip, not PCI. Check your PCI devices whether there's any "multimedia audio" class device at all. Else it's ISA. Try activating ISA PnP services first, to see whether that finds something.

Also, if you're compiling ALSA modules, you can't compile the ones from the main kernel (OSS) as well. They're mutually exclusive, and can't be used together. Disable everything to do with sound in the kernel, reinstall the alsa modules and try again.
