What operating system is on your drive? You do not need to format the drive before installing it in another pc. If you are connecting the drive to the same IDE cable as you brothers drive, you need to make your drive a slave. Now if you used Windows 2000 or XP and formated your drive using the NTFS file system, the windows 98 machine will not be able to read from your drive. Windows 98 use FAT32. If that is the case you need to find a pc that can read the NTFS file system.

Just plug it in as a slave drive, and add it into the BIOS on you're bros machine. Also, if the documents you want to keep are on the non-windows partition, then you don't need to format it, just format the windows one, and when you've re-installed the files will still be on your D: drive. (presuming the drive letter was D: and you haven't altered it using lastdrive or reserving letters etc)
