Computer Problem
Hello, I am setting up two computers for my brother and there are a few problems. On computer A, I set it up and it ran perfectly. However, the next day the monitor wouldn't turn on. I tested the monitor with another computer and it does work. Also, I replaced the video card with a known working video card and it still doesn't work.
For computer B, it keeps restarting during the middle of installation. I have replaced the power supply, hard drive, and used different windows 98 cds during the installation.
Here are the stats on the computers:
Computer A (Computer that keeps restarting):
OS: Windows 98 SE
RAM: 256
Motherboard: Asus A7V8X-X
Video Card: SIS 315 256-bit AGP 4X VGA
Power Supply: PowerMax ATX 400 Watts
CPU: AMD Athlon 1.5 Gb
Hard Drive: Maxtor 40 Gb
Monitor: Philips 109s
Burner: TDK 16x
CD-ROM
Computer B (Computer whose monitor won't turn on) :
OS: Windows 98 SE
RAM: 256
Motherboard: Asus A7V8X-X
Video Card: Chaintech GeForce2 MX400
Power Supply: 300 Watts
CPU: AMD Athlon 1.5 Gb
Hard Drive: IBM 40 Gb
Monitor: Philips 109s
Burner: Sony 40x
CD-ROM
If you need any other information, let me know.
Thanks in advanced!
Devin

On the computer where the monitor won't start, did you check to see if the refresh rates are set at the right speeds that is compatible with the monitor?

I asked the person who used to computer last if he changed any settings and he said no. Any the monitor wouldn't even display POST information before start up.
And I am sorry if I am reposting... I didn't know. My other post wasn't getting answered so I thought that it would have been ok. Sorry again.

thats ok just don't let it happen again
ok comp b does the computer start-up meaning fans spin hdd ect?? does it get any bios beeps?? does the monitor itself come on and just display no video or what?
comp a you say it keeps restarting?? it just powers down?? does it only do it during install meaning only when the cd-rom and hdd are spinning? run memtest and check your memory this does two things one the obvious and two rules out any issues with the board. This could just be the board grounding or it might be that its overloading your p/s when both the cd-rom and hard drive are spinnning.

For computer B's monitor, a green light turns on for a few seconds and then changes to red. Also, the fans in the computer are on and the POST beep is present.
Also, how do I do a RAM check for Computer A?
Thanks!

Ok, I turned on Computer A and tried to install the drivers for the NIC from the CD. But the computer restarted again. I tried this about 5 times. What can I do now?

did you run memtest and it checked out ok with no problems??
no shut downs no reported bad memory??
here's a few things it can be.
1. your system might be overheating, check your temps in the bios and see what they are running at? since you can't keep it powered on it will be hard to install any other types of software so no need trying until you get it fixed you might corrupt the system
2. your board might be shorting out, so you need to pull it out of your case place it on a phone book or something no conductive and leave the cpu hs/fan on and install only one stick of known good ram the video card then boot from there.
3. your ps might be going bad or over heating?? also check the cord and other plug-ins as well
check all the connections inside the case and on the board, I once had tthe same issue and it was a bad atx connector that i thought plugged in all the way but was actually loose

OK, lets do this computer by computer...
On computer A (the one that keeps restarting)
Try swapping the RAM from computer B, and see if that makes a difference.
In bios, load default settings, and see if that makes any difference.
Are your cpu settings correct for example?
Take out any unnessessary cards such as nic or sound and try installing windows that way.
As for Computer B, nothing immediately springs to mind, you could check that all the cables and cards (especially the video) are correctly positioned and pushed 'fully home'.
Can you even see the post on this, or is it dead from the start?
See how you get on, and post back...
