I work for a company with five computers and seven digital printers (industrial not desktop) on a peer-to-peer network. We had a windows 98 machine that died a horrible death and upgraded to an XP machine. I ran the network wizard on the XP machine but didn't create a networking disc. Unfortunately, out of the entire network I can only access one of the five computers on the XP machine. We're running multiple OS's, NT, ME and XP (I know ME is a virus unto itself, ).

I know I can rerun the wizard and then create a disc to make the machines compatible, but the problem lies in the fact that the network exists solely to print stuff on network printers and the configurations were setup by the service people and I assume if I rerun the wizard I have to drag out five different reps to reconfigure their machines.

When I search for computers with the XP machine it can only find the one that's already there, but every other computer can see every other computer on the network (although they can't 'connect' to the XP machine, even though they see it).

Any ideas?

p.s., I know I'm new here, first post and all, but I really found much of the advice on the topics I perused quite valuable and hope that someone here can help.

First thing I would check is whether "File and Printer Sharing" is activated, or not.

Not certain exactly where right off the top of my head, try "Help" to get started, or the "Printers and other hardware" section of the control panel.

And welcome to TechIMO. Remember to reply, especially if it is to confirm that the problem has been solved...

Windows XP and 2000 I believe have a default workgroup name that is different from 98, might want to check what it is on the other machines and make sure the XP machine is in that workgroup.

Send a message via AIM to atomicstomp
You may want to make sure that the other komputers have the permission to access your xp node. Oh its under the security tab.

Thanks for everyone's advice, unfortunatly I've tried the fixes and actually went through each computer and made every single one identical, the problem is still there. I guess I'll just have to make do until we replace our XP machine and then I can start over, .

Anyways, thanks again!
