Kids webmin help

hey there,

i have drake 9.1 running with webmin as well. i changed the port # in webmin and forwarded that particular port in my router.

when i was at work(slacker) i tried to access this box from the web with :
__________________________________
http://localhost:myportnumber/
__________________________________

but i get taken to the wrong site. do i need to enter the external ip my isp assigns to me? if so what would the path look like?

http://ipaddress:myportnumber/ ??

thanks in advance

You will need to use your IP at home to connect along with the port number you want to connect on.

hmmm, doesnt seem to work but it DOES say:

"this web server is running in SSL mode. Try the URL https://192.168.X.X:myportnumber/"

but thats the ip my router gives me on my LAN. anyhow, i tried both ip's and yet it still doesnt connect. also, i know at home i use the S in https but when i access this from the web while away from my LAN i use http and not https correct?

Well it depends.

For starters you will need to use your external IP, your internal IP doesn't exist to the rest of the world.

As far as http versus https, that's a webmin issue. If webmin requires a secure connection then you will need to use https.

Not sure if you can view the desktop with webmin (never used it)

You could set up tightvnc to do desktop management remotely though. That works securely and seems to do what you want. It will be slow on a slow upload though

Finance ok, tightvnc it is

maybe a bit of help you could provide with using tight-vnc? i have it installed and can run vncserver from a terminal. it tells me:
___________________________________
[br@localhost br]$ vncserver
Couldn't start Xvnc; trying default font path.
Please set correct fontPath in the vncserver script.

New 'X' desktop is localhost:1

Starting applications specified in /home/br/.vnc/xstartup
Log file is /home/br/.vnc/localhost:1.log
___________________________________

now first off dont i have to add something to my .vnc/xstartup file in order to view the whole desktop and not just a terminal?

i can use rfbdrake on my LAN at home but i never got it working properly remotely. also, as far as port forwarding goes(for the linksys), which does tightvnc/vnc use? no manual for either unfortunately. thanks for any help you can give me, still new to vnc on linux

bump?

ok, i messed around some more with tightvnc but just at home on my lan. i can connect from linux to windows, but when i connect from windows to linux i get the session but what comes up is windowmaker.

but the thing is im running kde on mandrake. i dont have any font issues this time i just get a clean message:
________________________________________________

[br@localhost br]$ vncserver

New 'X' desktop is localhost:1

Starting applications specified in /home/br/.vnc/xstartup
Log file is /home/br/.vnc/localhost:1.log

[br@localhost br]$

__________________________________________________ _

any idea why windowmaker comes up and do i need to forward ports 5800 to 5900 in my router to access this from outside........................?

ok, i sure like replying to myself . i figured out it was my /.vnc/xstartup file which was the culprit and changed it accordingly to startkde. i can log in now no problem but just get an X server with basically my wallpaper. no menus, no kicker, etc. even X0rfbdrake gives me the same window when i try connecting to this box running the server. any other options? ive read somewhere you can log into a vnc host with a browser. i see i need to do some more looking as this is annoying but im getting close.

denoument

just wanted to add to this post and conclude my problem. i set gnome as my default desktop in drake, changed the /.vnc/xstartup to " exec /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc" and can view gnome without a problem, panel, icons, etc.

i still log in at home all the time on kde though, just use gnome to connect remotely through vnc...................(not anymore though)
but whats better is i got rfbdrake to view the current running desktop which is kde. i just tried connecting with myipaddress:0 instead of 1 as the session and wouldnt you know it worked.

proof is in the pudding and heres the pudding. it might be as slow as grandma but even fluxbox IS over this connection as ive found out. this is on a win98 machine running tightvnc
