Internet and XP

Awhile ago I posted a thread concerning connecting to my LAN (RR) via win. XP. The problem I am having is it takes me several times of starting and rebooting before my pc will connect to the internet. Sometimes it takes up to 5-7 reboots to finally connect. I thought it was MY homebuilt PC that was the problem, but now that we are using a brand new Dell and having the same problem I am concerned. Connecting to the outside world is rather troublesome at times. ???? What am I doing wrong here..... I never seemed to have this problem with Win. 98se. This has all started since I upgraded my other pc to XP and the Dell which came with XP.

Hello my friend...
I am using Xp and I don't have any problems. Are you using the MSN Explorer of Internet Explorer. Sometimes my MSN Explorer will not sign me in. I am on the internet but I just can't get loged in. I then click on IE and away I go.
BTW I am using dial up.

We have AOL, MSN, and of course IE that we use. None of them connect. I am using Road Runner with an external Cable modem. No other devices or networks. The cable modem lights are all working, but the PC just doesn't want to connect to the outside world.... except when it decides too.....

Frustrated....---banging head against keyboard---

Hmmm I know XP has its own PPPoE which is a pain sometimes for DSL people like myself, but that doesn't effect a cable modem...

You've checked all the settigns to make sure you are setup right?

When you can't connect have tried pinging out to yahoo or something?

Also try pinging 127.0.0.1 the loopback address to see if maybe it is your NIC that is acting up. Maybe update the drivers for it.

Then try to ping dns, and the gateway...

Well, it seems to be working ok now. Next time it acts up I will try and see what happens and report back.

Thanks,
Sweeper
