sound problem

Hello!
When CDs plays there is no sound, I only get CD sound from the headphone jack on the front of the CD or DVD-ROM drive. Avi and mp3 files has no sound (video works ok) but PowerDVD plays DVDs ok, and the sound working perfectly. If any player runs in same time with PowerDVD all souds works! I reinstalled all drivers related to sound, players and codecs too, but did not help. Checked for viruses - all clear. I did not install anything new or uninstall any program when problem shows, everything worked fine for months.
My configuration: Pentium4 1,8 Ghz, 256 MB RAM, NVIDIA GeForce2 MX\MX 400, Avance AC'97 Audio for VIA (R) Audio Controller (on board sound card), DirectX9, Windows 98se

try uninstalling powerDVD and see if sound works then.

possibly and IRQ conflict.

make sure the audio out plug on the drive is plugged into the sound card

this is just a shot in the dark - have you tried to check and see if cd-audio is muted?

check in the windows control panel and see. its worth a try.
